A Plan for School Funding: Let’s keep it in the classroom and get back to the basic purpose of public education We need to have an open and honest conversation about the purpose of our public education system. Public education exists to provide successful academic...
Has Your Child Been Surveyed?
Over the last few months, I have been involved with surveys and heard reports of surveys being given to students. Although our schools say these surveys are to “better our schools”, no one from the district will define what a “better school” looks like.
Happy New Years!
Now that it’s 2022, I want to kick off the new year with a campaign launch party. And, you’re invited!
Merry Christmas!
Here’s my Board of Education candidate filing update and my holiday wishes for you and your family.
New Hanover Schools Equity Summit
In November, student equity teams were bused, as a field trip, to the Board of Education center. What’s unclear is what types of interactions did these students have with Sophic Solutions’ staff. The appearance of modeling equity to make positive change, without disclosing being done, makes me question what is happening with our children.
Happy Thanksgiving!
For my friends, family, and neighbors, this my Thanksgiving message to you and your loved ones.
Who Should Run for School Board?
We all desire to vote great people into office. However, in order to get them there we need candidates to vote. For me, my children are the reason I’m running for school board. If you’ve ever considered a run for office, now would be the time. Our community needs great people to step up.
The Substitute Teacher Crisis in New Hanover County Schools
The New Hanover County school district faces a dire shortage in substitute teachers. This is unacceptable. Here are some ideas to help resolve the problem.
The Hat
My young daughter helped me design my hat to wear while on the campaign trail for school board. I wear it to remind me why I’m on this journey: to secure an outstanding future for our kids.
Why vote for me?
In November 2022 you will have the option to fill four seats of our New Hanover County School Board of Education. In regards to who you should vote for, these three questions come to my mind.
Covid and Quarantines
Covid, Kids, and New Hanover SchoolsCurrently, there's a big debate in our community over COVID, COVID protocols and quarantines. I want to start by saying that COVID-19 is a real sickness, that thankfully at large does NOT negatively affect children. This needs to be...
Curriculum Accountability
Teachers, parents and our community deserve to know a clear and concise curriculum is being implemented in our schools.
Community Voice
No One Should be Afraid to Speak Up on Behalf of a ChildStarting kindergarten in the 2020 school year was a whirlwind. So many questions, concerns and hardships for all. As a parent I engaged in town hall dialogs, emails and phone calls to our local school and Board...
Academic Rigor and Integrity
Academic Integrity needs to be at the forefront of education for ALL. Students’ grades should be based on their mastery of the subject matter.
Expansion of Public School Choice
NHCS should acknowledge that parents have educational choices available to them that include our public schools and will ultimately CHOOSE the best option that meets the needs of their children.
Clear District Implementation of State Requirements
The New Hanover County school district needs to be able to provide a clear and articulate summary of the state’s grade level requirements and expectations.
Diversity in Academics
We need diversity in academics so that we can get positive outcomes for all. Currently, NHCS’ sole focus of diversity is on one’s racial heritage and gender, while suppressing diversity of thought, ideas and opinions.
Transparency in Data Collection and Surveys
Parents need to be part of the decision-making process as it relates to collecting student data through surveys conducted in our classrooms as well as clearly identifying the purpose and objectives of these surveys. Buy-in from our parent stakeholders only serves to increase transparency and strengthen the bond and relationship between our parents and our schools.
Consistent and Timely Communication Across Platforms
New Hanover County Schools must identify and implement better, consistent, and more timely methods of communication to all stakeholders.
Increase Discussion Opportunities for Stakeholders
There’s a need for an internal discussion about NHCS’ educational direction between the school board, district administration and frontline educators.
